Press Release - Elk Grove Joins Great Plates Delivered Meal Delivery Program

Posted: 05/06/2020

The City of Elk Grove is joining a first-in-the-nation meal delivery service to support Elk Grove’s older adults and local restaurants. The “Great Plates Delivered” program was introduced on April 24, 2020, by Governor Gavin Newsom. Great Plates Delivered has two purposes:

  • Help seniors and other adults at high risk from COVID-19 to stay home and stay healthy by delivering three nutritious meals a day, and
  • Provide essential economic stimulus to local businesses struggling to stay afloat during the COVID-19 crisis.

Program details are still being worked out, and total investment will depend on demand, but the City is preparing to enroll up to 500 seniors in the program. This would provide funding to local restaurants of up to $1 million during the first 30 days. Through the program, the City would be reimbursed for 93.75% of the total costs from the State and FEMA.

“This program offers a win-win to address the needs of two distinct groups within our community who are struggling most during this crisis,” said Elk Grove City Manager, Jason Behrmann. “The City believes this program is a smart investment to help our community.”

Under the program, restaurants and caterers will be contracted to prepare up to 10,500 meals per week, 3 meals a day, to eligible seniors in Elk Grove who do not currently receive CalFresh/SNAP or Meals on Wheels benefits. Businesses selected to participate in the program must meet statewide nutrition guidelines.

The City is connecting with non-profit organizations and local housing developments that serve older adults to promote the availability of the program. Initial meal deliveries are expected to start next week.
